Octoplus Super Stool - 10/06/2009

A good example is Octoplus. Owner Mel Wilde and I go back more years than probably either of us care to remember. We’re both still here and judging by his latest offerings, he isn’t going anywhere! I’ve been taking a look at the new Octoplus Super Stool from the Wigan-based firm and once again I think Mel’s done the business. Here is an item that is equally at home on the flat platforms of your local commercial or on the uneven banks of a tiny river.

The four legs are square instead of the old hexagonal shape, with small indents for the locking nuts. They also feature Octoplus’ brilliant mudfeet that tilt in any direction. The lid is moulded plastic with a gap for a pole, while underneath are two compartments: first, there’s a removable shallow tray for floats, pole winders or other accessories. This can then be removed to reveal a slightly deeper compartment underneath. It holds a surprising amount of kit, although obviously bulkier items like reels will need to be carried in a rucksack or carryall. Once folded away, the stool can be carried like a briefcase or over the shoulder, thanks to its carrying handle and removable shoulder strap. Simple fasteners keep the lid from opening

In the couple of months since I’ve had the Super Stool, I’ve been using it for evening sessions on a local commercial after work. Without the luxury of many hours of daylight, I’m able to take the stool, a few pellets in a small rucksack and a pole and landing-net handle, and I’m ready in minutes. Come the new river season, there’s a little stream I know where the chub run to 5lb plus. Again, evening sessions with the Super Stool, a made-up rod and a loaf of bread will be high on the agenda. So far, I don’t have any complaints, but then I knew the latest product from Octoplus wouldn’t let me down.
