Hurworth Burn. What will the future hold?

Uncertain future for sport on one of top northern roach water.

Fears are rising this week that some of the most prolific stillwater roach fishing in the North East of the country could be lost to angling.

Hurworth Burn near Hartlepool is widely acknowledged as one of the best silver fished venues in the area. However, the 21acre reservoir was last week put up for sale by its owners Anglian Water.

Open to sensible offers the water is up for sale through a local property agent, alongside two other venues in the same area, Hart and Crookfoot reservoirs, with concern growing over the future of angling at the venue which would be dependent on the new owners plans for the water.

“Anglian Water put them up for sale with an agent last week and we’ve no idea how this will affect the future of fishing on the reservoirs,” Mark Arrowsmith, assistant treasurer of Hartlepool and District Angling Club that owns the rights to the angling at both Hurworth Burn and Hart reservoir told Total Coarse Fishing.

“On it’s day there is nothing to touch Hurworth’s roach fishing, last year bags of up to 50lb were being taken in matches where the lowest weight was 30lb, but if it’s sold then all of that could be lost.”

Speaking to Pole Fishing about the sale, a spokesperson for Anglian Water said:

“The reservoirs haven’t been used in the capacity they were designed for since they were employed by industry in 2001. As such we are looking to sell them on to new owners that could make better use of them.

“We are unsure of the future of angling at the venues as this would be down to the new owner of the waters."

Given the unprecedented nature of the sale – how often do reservoirs built in the late Victorian era come up for sale? – Anglian Water and the property agents that have been instructed to sell the reservoirs are unsure of the price that might be paid for the waters. As such they are letting the market decide and are open to sensible offers, with the reservoirs up for sale individually or as a whole.
