After talking to predator ace Ant Glascoe, Kris worked out a plan to tackle his local stretch of the river Wye on a Hereford and District AA ticket, armed with a number of new Savage Gear lures. And it wasn’t long before his rod was taking on a healthy bend.
“On the second swim I tried I had a big fish follow my lure on the first cast,” Kris told TCF. “I cast to the same spot again, slowing my retrieve and the same fish hit the lure really hard.”
Playing the fish to the bank it stripped the braid from the 24-year-old’s baitcaster reel three times before it was finally safe in the net. On the scales the fish went 20lb, more than enough to make an anglers day - but the action wasn’t over yet.
“I only had a couple of hours to spare on the bank, but I’d had the pike so early on I had plenty of time left to try a few more swims,” continued Chris. “I moved down the river and when I got into the next swim I actually thought that there was someone throwing bricks in the river, but I soon realized it was something else.”
Using the same successful lure that had fooled the pike, just a few casts in the swim saw Kris receive an arm-wrenching take from something that felt very different. And after a adrenalin-fueled fight the second species of the day was in the net – a hard fighting Wye salmon.
“It was an amazing scrap, the fish was so powerful. It made my day, a huge thanks has to go to Ant for all his advice,” added Kris.
The winning lure on the day was a Savage Gear Prey89 in brown trout par colours fished on 50lb Savage Gear HP Adrenaline braid.
Fighting fit salmon finished off the session nicely.
