Drennan has just introduced some of the lightest and thinnest float rods ever seen in the UK – the Acolyte Ultra range.
The two rods – a 13ft and a 14ft model – are built from a high-modulus carbon with a new design cross-weave carbon overwrap, a combination that means that the 13ft model weighs just 4¾oz (135g). The blank feels rigid and the tip has very little bounce, so it provides a crisp line pickup on the strike. The tip action is also soft enough to act as a shock absorber when playing fish and has a cushioning affect to help prevent hook-pulls.
The 13ft model is rated to fish reel lines from 2½lb to 4lb and hook links as light as 1lb. That doesn’t mean to say that it won’t cope with heavier line, however, as deputy editor Steve Martin discovered when he tried out the rod during a visit to Drennan. “I hooked a good carp on 8lb line and the playing action of the rod was incredible,” he commented. “You feel in total control when playing fish, and there’s a terrific amount in reserve when playing big specimens.”
The 13ft is ideal for both rivers and stillwaters, but it you want a rod with a little more length then the 14ft Acolyte Ultra is really worth a look. It’s got all the features and characteristics of the 13ft model and weighs 5¼oz (185g), most of which is in the butt and the handle, and once in the hand it feels better balanced than some 13ft rods on the market. It’s definitely one for the river angler.
These are quality rods and they come with competitive prices.
