At the whistle I fed a couple of balls of Sonubaits Skimmer mix on two lines at 14 metres with a bit of choppy on one line and after doing that went out on the waggler at distance to see if any slabs were sitting further out whilst I waited for my pole line to settle down. It was a slow start for many of the anglers and in the first half hour all I could muster was three micro roach on the wag and single maggot. I finally went over on my pole line and had to wait a good ten minutes before my float slid away, it was a tench of over the pound mark but that was that and I had to go back on the waggler to try and tempt some bites, it was not looking promising at all.
The water temps felt very cold and not a carp was hooked all day by the entire field and the lakes silvers did not seem to be in a feeding mood either. A few small skimmers on the waggler was taking me nowhere and I needed to make my pole line work but if the fish are not there or not willing to feed then there is very little you can do some times. I kept switching my hook bait form a piece of worm to two pieces of worm, a single red maggot or a piece of worm and maggot, a single pinkie or two. Every now and then it would work and a skimmer plus the odd pound skimmer would grace my net. It was tough but Kevin Jackson to my right was not getting many bites but when he did it was a quality fish including a bonus golden tench and his weight of over 25lbs was enough to win the day. Nick Plum two pegs to my left on the point tipped his way to some decent skimmers for a second placed 20lbs with Bill Postlewaite to my left third on the day. I was in the right area but felt my peg in the corner left me a bit cut off from the main action and my 12lbs 10oz saw me finish a disappointing 7th on the day. As I weighed in I felt I had missed out on my main objective of finishing in the top six overall but a few other weights went my way as some of the field really struggled and I managed to finish 4th in the league table on 70pts behind winner Martin Charnock 74pts, Andy Silver 72pts and Bill Postlewaite 71pts. Nick Gilbert 69pts and Nick Plum 68pts made up the overall frame at the end.
I would like to thank Nick for sponsoring the league and for Chris Jones for organising the 8 round league in great fashion it certainly kept us all busy over the winter period and well done to Martin on a fine effort.
